Hyundai Kona Maintenance Schedule
This guide lists the service intervals Hyundai gives for the gas Kona with the Smartstream 2.0 Atkinson and Smartstream 1.6 T-GDi engines, from the maintenance chapter of the 2027 Kona owner's manual, read November 3, 2026. Intervals are by miles or months, whichever comes first. The Kona Electric and other model years are not covered here and can differ, so check the manual for your vehicle.
What is the Hyundai Kona maintenance schedule?
The 2027 Kona owner's manual lists replacing the engine oil and filter every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, rotating the tires every 8,000 miles or 12 months, adding fuel additive every 8,000 miles or 12 months if TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is not available, replacing the cabin air filter every 16,000 miles or 24 months, the air cleaner filter every 24,000 miles or 36 months and the brake fluid every 48,000 miles or 48 months. Spark plugs are replaced every 96,000 miles on the 2.0 Atkinson and every 48,000 miles on the 1.6 T-GDi. Severe use shortens the oil interval to 5,000 miles or 6 months.
Every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months
| Item | Per the 2027 Kona manual |
|---|---|
| Engine oil and engine oil filter | Replace, on both engines (requires API SN PLUS or above full synthetic oil) |

| Fuel additives | Add (one bottle is recommended if TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is not available) |
| Brake fluid | Inspect |
| Battery condition; brake lines, hoses and connections | Inspect |
| Disc brakes and pads; steering gear rack, linkage and boots | Inspect |

Hyundai says to never add additives to the engine oil. For oil grade and capacity, see our Kona oil type and capacity guide.
Kona replacement intervals

From the normal maintenance schedule in the 2027 Kona owner's manual, read November 3, 2026. Where both miles and months are shown, service is due at whichever comes first.
Hyundai notes the spark plugs can be replaced before their interval when other items are being serviced. Our service team can replace your cabin air filter and handle the rest of the schedule.
Kona inspection intervals
| Item | Normal schedule |
|---|---|
| Drive belts | First inspect at 48,000 mi (78,000 km) or 72 months; after that, every 8,000 mi (13,000 km) or 12 months |
| Intercooler, in/out hose | First inspect at 8,000 mi (13,000 km) or 6 months; after that, every 20,000 mi (32,000 km) or 24 months |
| Vapor hose, fuel filler cap and fuel tank; fuel tank air filter; fuel lines, hoses and connections | Inspect every 16,000 mi (24 months) |
| Driveshaft and boots | Inspect every 16,000 mi (24 months) |
| Propeller shaft (AWD) | Inspect every 16,000 mi (24 months) |
| Transfer case oil and rear differential oil (AWD) | Inspect every 32,000 mi (48 months) |
From the normal maintenance schedule in the 2027 Kona owner's manual, read November 3, 2026. The chart runs to 104,000 miles (156 months).
Hyundai says the drive belt should be replaced when cracks occur or tension is reduced excessively, and that the transmission fluid, transfer case oil and rear differential oil should be changed anytime they have been submerged in water. The fuel filter is considered maintenance free, but Hyundai says to replace it immediately if there is fuel flow restriction, surging, loss of power or hard starting.
Severe usage schedule
The 2027 Kona manual says to follow its severe usage schedule if any of its conditions apply:
| Item | Severe usage interval |
|---|---|
| Engine oil and engine oil filter | Replace every 5,000 mi (8,000 km) or 6 months |
| Automatic transmission fluid (1.6 T-GDi) | Replace every 60,000 mi (100,000 km) |
| Intelligent Variable Transmission fluid (2.0 Atkinson) | Replace every 55,000 mi (90,000 km) |
| Transfer case oil and rear differential oil (AWD) | Replace every 72,000 mi (120,000 km) |
| Air cleaner filter, spark plugs, cabin air filter | Replace more frequently |
| Steering gear, suspension bolts, brakes (pads, calipers and rotors), driveshaft, propeller shaft (AWD) | Inspect more frequently |
From the maintenance under severe usage and low mileage conditions table of the 2027 Kona owner's manual, read November 3, 2026. Each item applies only under the driving conditions the manual lists for it.
Severe conditions in the manual: repeated short trips of less than 5 mi (8 km) in normal temperatures or less than 10 mi (16 km) in freezing temperatures; extensive idling or low-speed driving for long distances; rough, dusty, muddy, unpaved, graveled or salt-spread roads; areas using salt or other corrosive materials, or very cold weather; heavy dust; heavy traffic; uphill, downhill or mountain roads; towing, camping or loads on the roof; patrol car, taxi or other commercial use; frequent high speeds or rapid acceleration and deceleration; frequent stop-and-go driving; and engine oil that is not recommended. Hyundai also says to use the severe schedule after more than 10 years or 100,000 mi.
The Oil Life Management System
Hyundai says the Kona may be equipped with an Oil Life Management System that predicts engine oil life from your driving history. If the oil wears faster because of how the vehicle is driven, the remaining oil life alert appears on the instrument cluster before the normal replacement interval.
The system works when the recommended engine oil is used; if it is not, Hyundai says to follow the severe usage schedule. Reset the remaining oil life from the infotainment system every time the oil is changed, and if no alert appears by the maximum maintenance interval, Hyundai says to have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealer.
