Hyundai Kona Oil Type and Capacity
The Kona comes with two gas engines, and they hold different amounts of oil. This guide covers the oil grade, capacity and change interval Hyundai lists for the 2027 Kona with the 1.6L turbo (Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi) and the 2.0L (Smartstream G2.0 Atkinson), plus how to check the level. It is based on the 2027 Kona owner's manual, read October 27, 2026. Other years and the Kona Electric differ, so check the manual for your vehicle.
What oil does a Hyundai Kona take?
Per the 2027 Kona owner's manual, both gas engines take SAE 0W-20 oil meeting API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6, and the maintenance schedule requires full synthetic. The 1.6L turbo holds 5.1 US qt. (4.8 liters) and the 2.0L holds 4.5 US qt. (4.3 liters) for a drain and refill. Change the oil and filter every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, or every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months under severe usage.
Kona engine oil type and capacity by engine
| Engine | Oil | Capacity (drain and refill) |
|---|---|---|
| 1.6L turbo (Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi) | SAE 0W-20, API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6; full synthetic required | 5.1 US qt. (4.8 liters) |
| 2.0L (Smartstream G2.0 Atkinson) | SAE 0W-20, API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6 | 4.5 US qt. (4.3 liters) |
From the Recommended Lubricants And Capacities and Recommended SAE viscosity number sections of the 2027 Kona owner's manual, read October 27, 2026.
For these engines, the manual says to use only 0W-20 weight engine oil, because oils of any other viscosity could result in engine damage. The maintenance schedule footnote requires API SN PLUS (or above) full synthetic oil for the engine oil and filter interval. Never add any additives to the engine oil.
Kona oil change interval
| Schedule | 1.6L turbo | 2.0L |
|---|---|---|
| Normal maintenance | Every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months | Every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months |
| Severe usage | Every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months | Every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months |
From the normal and severe usage maintenance schedules in the 2027 Kona owner's manual, read October 27, 2026. Whichever comes first, miles or months.
If a lower grade oil (mineral type, semi-synthetic, lower grade spec) is used, replace the oil and filter on the severe usage schedule. The manual also says the oil change schedule is there to prevent oil deterioration and is not related to oil consumption, so check and refill the oil regularly.
When the Kona is on the severe usage schedule
The two engines have different severe usage lists in the 2027 Kona manual. For the 1.6L turbo, the 5,000-mile or 6-month interval applies under conditions D, H, I and L. For the 2.0L, it applies under all twelve conditions, A through L:
| Condition | From the manual |
|---|---|
| A | Repeatedly driving short distance of less than 5 miles (8 km) in normal temperature or less than 10 miles (16 km) in freezing temperature |
| B | Extensive engine idling or low speed driving for long distances |
| C | Driving on rough, dusty, muddy, unpaved, graveled or salt-spread roads |
| D | Driving in areas using salt or other corrosive materials or in very cold weather |
| E | Driving in the heavy dust conditions |
| F | Driving in heavy traffic |
| G | Driving on uphill, downhill, or mountain roads |
| H | Using for towing or camping, and driving with loading on the roof |
| I | Driving for patrol car, taxi, or other commercial use |
| J | Frequently driving under high speed or rapid acceleration/deceleration |
| K | Frequently driving in stop-and-go conditions |
| L | Engine oil usage which is not recommended (mineral type, semi-synthetic, lower grade spec, etc.) |
How to check the Kona engine oil level
The 2027 Kona manual's steps are:
- Follow all of the oil manufacturer's precautions.
- Make sure the vehicle is on level ground in P (Park) with the parking brake applied.
- Turn on the engine and warm it up until the coolant temperature reaches a constant normal temperature.
- Turn off the engine, remove the oil filler cap and pull the dipstick out. Wait 15 minutes for the oil to return to the oil pan.
- Wipe the dipstick clean and re-insert it fully.
- Pull the dipstick out again and check the level. It should be between F (Full) and L (Low).
- If the level is below L, add enough of the specified oil to bring it to F.
Hyundai also says not to spill engine oil when adding or changing it, and to wipe off spilled oil immediately. Oil consumption may increase while a new vehicle breaks in and should stabilize after about 4,000 miles (6,000 km). The oil is very hot right after driving, so replace it only after it has cooled down.
If the Engine Oil Pressure light comes on
The manual says that when oil pressure is low due to insufficient engine oil, the Engine Oil Pressure warning light illuminates. If the vehicle keeps being driven in this state, the enhanced engine protection system, which limits the engine's power, is activated and the Malfunction Indicator Lamp illuminates.
On the 2.0L, the light and the engine protection turn off when oil pressure is restored. On the 1.6L turbo, they turn off after the engine is restarted.

Kona engine oil questions
What type of oil does a Hyundai Kona take?
The 2027 Kona owner's manual lists SAE 0W-20 engine oil meeting API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6 for both engines, the 1.6L turbo (Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi) and the 2.0L (Smartstream G2.0 Atkinson). For these engines, the manual says to use only 0W-20 oil.
How much oil does a Hyundai Kona hold?
For a drain and refill, the 2027 Kona manual lists 5.1 US qt. (4.8 liters) for the 1.6L turbo and 4.5 US qt. (4.3 liters) for the 2.0L.
Does the Kona need full synthetic oil?
The maintenance schedule requires API SN PLUS (or above) full synthetic oil. If a lower grade oil such as mineral or semi-synthetic is used, replace the engine oil and filter on the severe usage schedule.
How often does a Kona need an oil change?
On the normal schedule, both engines get new engine oil and filter every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first. Under the severe usage conditions listed in the manual, the interval is every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months.
How do I know which engine my Kona has?
The manual lists oil by engine: Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi (1.6L turbo) or Smartstream G2.0 Atkinson (2.0L). Check your vehicle's documents, or ask our service team with your VIN.
Should I add an oil additive?
No. Hyundai says never to add any additives to the engine oil, because additives can change the properties of the oil and may cause serious engine failure.
