Hyundai Warning Lights Explained
Not every light on a Hyundai dashboard means the same thing. Some ask you to pull over, some ask for a dealer visit, and some only tell you a feature is on. This guide walks through the warning and indicator lights in the 2027 Tucson owner's manual, read October 26, 2026, with what Hyundai says to do for each. Hyundai notes that the shape and location of lights can vary with vehicle specifications and software version, so check your own manual.
What do I do when a warning light stays on in my Hyundai?
Hyundai says a warning light that is still on after the engine starts indicates a situation that needs attention. For the engine oil pressure, charging system or low brake fluid warnings, the 2027 Tucson manual says to drive carefully to the nearest safe location and stop. For most other warning lights that stay on, it says to have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealer.
The start-up check
Each time you put the Engine Start/Stop button in ON, many warning lights in the 2027 Tucson come on for about 3 seconds and go out; the airbag light takes 3 to 6 seconds. That is the system checking itself.
Hyundai's rule of thumb is to make sure every warning light is off once the engine has started. A light that stays on indicates a situation that needs attention. The manual also says the location of some lights may differ depending on the order they appear in, so it helps to learn the symbols.
Lights that mean pull over safely
For these, the 2027 Tucson manual tells you to drive carefully to the nearest safe location and stop.
| Light or message | What it means | What to do, per Hyundai |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil pressure warning light | Engine oil pressure is low. | Stop, turn the engine off and check the oil level; add oil if it is low. If the light stays on, or you have no oil, have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible. Continued driving may cause engine failure, and severe damage could result if the engine is not stopped right away. |
| Charging system warning light | A malfunction with the alternator or electrical charging system. | Stop, turn the engine off and check the alternator drive belt for looseness or breakage. If the belt is fine, there may be a problem in the charging system; have the vehicle inspected if the light stays on. |
| Parking brake warning light with the parking brake released | The brake fluid level in the reservoir is low. | Stop, and with the engine off check the brake fluid and add fluid as required, then check the brake components for leaks. If there is a leak, the light stays on or the brakes do not work properly, do not drive the vehicle; have it inspected. |
| "Engine overheated" message | Engine coolant temperature is above about 248 °F (120 °C) and the engine may be damaged. | Follow the "If the engine overheats" steps in chapter 8 of the owner's manual. |

Brake lights: what each combination means
ABS light alone
A malfunction with the Anti-lock Brake System. Hyundai says the hydraulic braking system still operates; have the vehicle inspected if the light stays on while driving.
ABS and parking brake lights together
The Electronic Brake Force Distribution warning: the braking system is not working normally. Avoid high speed driving and abrupt braking, and have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible. Hyundai adds that the speedometer, odometer or tripmeter may not work, and the MDPS light may come on with steering effort changing.
Parking brake light, brake released
Low brake fluid. Hyundai explains that the Tucson's dual-diagonal braking system still brakes two wheels if one half fails, but you will need more pedal travel and force, and stopping distances get longer.
Lights that mean book an inspection
When one of these stays on, the 2027 Tucson manual says to have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealer.
| Light | What it means |
|---|---|
| Malfunction Indicator Lamp (check engine) | A malfunction with the emission control system, the engine or the powertrain. Driving with it on may damage the emission control system and affect drivability or fuel economy; catalytic converter damage is possible. |
| Airbag warning light | A malfunction with the Safety Restraint System (SRS), if it stays on while driving. |
| Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) warning light | A malfunction with the power steering. |
| Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) warning light | A malfunction with the EPB. Hyundai notes it can also come on alongside the ESC indicator to show ESC is not working properly, which does not mean the EPB has failed. |
| Electronic Stability Control (ESC) indicator, steady | A malfunction with the ESC system. A blinking ESC light just means ESC is working. |
| AWD warning light (if equipped) | A malfunction with the all-wheel drive system. |
| LED headlight warning light | On: an LED headlight malfunction. Blinking: a related part has a malfunction. Hyundai says driving with it on or blinking may reduce LED headlight life. |
| Low tire pressure light, blinking | Blinking for about 60 seconds and then staying on, or blinking every 3 seconds, means a Tire Pressure Monitoring System malfunction. A steady light means one or more tires are significantly under-inflated, and the cluster shows which one. |
| Immobilizer indicator, blinking | A malfunction with the immobilizer system. If it blinks for a few seconds because the smart key is not in the vehicle, the engine just cannot start without it. |

Driver assistance lights
Several lights belong to driver assistance features: Forward Safety, Lane Safety, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist and the Inattentive Driving warning. In the 2027 Tucson manual, a yellow light on these means the feature is deselected or disabled, its sensor or camera is blocked, or a malfunction is detected.
Hyundai's advice is to clear the sensor or camera first. If the yellow light stays on after the sensor or front view camera has been uncovered or unblocked, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealer. A red Forward Safety light blinking means the function is operating, and a green Lane Keeping Assist light blinking means that feature is working.
Lights that inform
These tell you about a condition or that a feature is on. A few still ask you to act.
| Light | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Low fuel level warning light | The tank is nearly empty; refuel as soon as possible. Driving with it on, or below E, may cause the engine to misfire and damage the catalytic converter. |
| Master warning light | One of a list of systems has a problem, such as a blocked radar, a light or LED headlight malfunction, a door or liftgate malfunction, low washer fluid (if equipped), an AWD malfunction (if equipped) or a TPMS malfunction. It turns off when the issue is resolved. |
| Seat belt warning light | A seat belt is not fastened. |
| Door open indicator | A door or the liftgate is open. Confirm all doors and the liftgate are fully closed before you drive. |
| AUTO HOLD indicator | White: Auto Hold is on. Green: it is holding the stopped vehicle. Yellow: a malfunction; have it inspected if it stays yellow while driving. |
| AWD Lock indicator (if equipped) | AWD LOCK mode is selected, to add drive power on wet pavement, snow covered roads or off-road. Hyundai says not to use it on dry paved roads or the highway. |
| Downhill Brake Control indicator | Green: DBC is on; blinking green: it is operating; yellow: a malfunction to have inspected. |
| Icy road warning light (if equipped) | The outside temperature is below 40 °F (4 °C) and the road may be icy. Avoid speeding, rapid acceleration, sudden braking or sharp turning. |
| Low key battery message | Shown when you press the Engine Start/Stop button to OFF; the smart key battery is low. See our key fob battery guide. |
From the warning and indicator lights and cluster display messages sections of the 2027 Tucson owner's manual, read October 26, 2026. Features marked "if equipped" are not on every Tucson.

Hyundai warning light questions
Is it normal for Hyundai dashboard lights to come on at start-up?
Yes. In the 2027 Tucson manual, many lights come on for about 3 seconds when the Engine Start/Stop button is in the ON position and then go off, and the airbag light stays on for 3 to 6 seconds. Hyundai says to make sure all warning lights are off after starting the engine; one that stays on means a situation that needs attention.
What should I do if the oil pressure light comes on?
Hyundai says to drive carefully to the nearest safe location and stop, turn the engine off and check the oil level, adding oil if it is low. If the light stays on after adding oil, or no oil is available, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealer as soon as possible. Continued driving with the light on may cause engine failure.
Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?
Hyundai calls it the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). It means a malfunction with the emission control system, the engine or the powertrain. Hyundai says driving with it on may damage the emission control system and affect drivability or fuel economy, and that catalytic converter damage is possible, so have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible.
Why are the ABS and parking brake lights on at the same time?
Hyundai says both lights on together while driving means the braking system is not working normally, and you may experience an unexpected and dangerous situation during sudden braking. Avoid high speed driving and abrupt braking, and have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible.
What does the master warning light mean on a Tucson?
It comes on when one of a list of systems has a problem, such as a blocked Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist or Smart Cruise Control radar, an exterior light or LED headlight malfunction, a door or liftgate malfunction, low washer fluid (if equipped) or a TPMS malfunction. It turns off once the issue is resolved.
Why does the icy road light come on?
On a Tucson that has it, the icy road warning light comes on when the outside temperature is below 40 °F (4 °C) to warn that the road may be icy. Hyundai says to avoid speeding, rapid acceleration, sudden braking or sharp turning.
