In the 2027 Elantra owner's manual (abridged edition), the normal schedule replaces the cabin air filter every 16,000 miles or 24 months, and the engine air filter (air cleaner filter) every 24,000 miles or 36 months, with engine air filter inspections at the mileages in between. When the car is driven on rough, dusty, muddy, unpaved, graveled or salt-spread roads, in heavy dust, or on uphill, downhill or mountain roads, the severe usage table says to inspect it more frequently depending on the condition.
Engine air filter (air cleaner)
The 2027 Elantra manual's guidance on the air cleaner filter:
- It can be cleaned for inspection using compressed air. Do not wash or rinse it, because water can damage the filter. If it is soiled, replace it.
- If the vehicle is operated in extremely dusty or sandy areas, replace the element more often than the usual recommended intervals.
- Do not drive with the air cleaner filter removed; this may result in excessive engine wear.
- When removing the filter, be careful that dust or dirt does not enter the air intake.
- Use Hyundai genuine parts or the equivalent specified for your vehicle; non-genuine parts may damage the air flow sensor.

How often should the Elantra engine air filter be replaced?
The same schedule inspects the air cleaner filter at 8,000 and 16,000 miles and replaces it at 24,000 miles (36 months), repeating that pattern: replacement at 24,000, 48,000, 72,000 and 96,000 miles. On roads that are rough, dusty, muddy, unpaved, graveled or salt-spread, or in heavy dust (conditions C and E), it is inspected more frequently.
Is the engine air filter the same as the air cleaner filter?
Yes. The manual calls the engine's air filter the air cleaner filter. It sits in the air cleaner in the engine compartment, and the manual warns not to drive with it removed, because that may result in excessive engine wear. The cabin air filter is a separate item on the schedule.
Can I clean the engine air filter?
