Hyundai Kona Towing Capacity: What Hyundai Says
If you are wondering how much a Hyundai Kona can tow, the short answer from Hyundai is that it is not meant to pull a trailer. This guide quotes the 2027 Kona owner's manual (SX2, for the 2.0L and 1.6L turbo gas engines), read October 28, 2026, and lays out what the manual does allow: hitch mounted racks, roof rail loads and the weight ratings on the door sill label. The manual for your own vehicle is the final word.
What is the Hyundai Kona towing capacity?
Hyundai does not give the Kona a trailer towing rating. The Trailer Towing section of the 2027 Kona owner's manual says: "We do not recommend using this vehicle for trailer towing." The manual does allow hitch mounted accessories such as bike racks up to 220 lbs. (100 kg) including the rack, and 200 lbs. on the roof side rails, evenly distributed.
Can the Kona tow a trailer?
The Trailer Towing section of the 2027 Kona owner's manual is one sentence long: "We do not recommend using this vehicle for trailer towing." The manual gives no trailer weight or tongue weight rating for the Kona, and the hyundaiusa.com Kona page we checked on October 28, 2026 lists no towing capacity either.
If pulling a small trailer, a boat or a camper is part of your plans, that is worth weighing when you compare models, and the owner's manual for any vehicle you are considering is the place to check its trailer rating.
Hitch mounted racks and carriers
| Rule | What the 2027 Kona manual says |
|---|---|
| Maximum load | 220 lbs. (100 kg), counting the weight of the accessory and the load together |
| Examples | Bicycle racks, wheelchair racks and similar hitch mounted accessories |
| Where the weight sits | The center of the weight must be within 19 in. (0.5 m) of the bumper |
| Farther out | The capacity is reduced by up to 10% per inch |
| Carrying capacity | The weight of the rack and load must be subtracted from the vehicle carrying capacity |
From "Hitch mounted accessories" in the Convenience Features chapter of the 2027 Kona owner's manual (SX2), read October 28, 2026.
A hitch carrier also changes how some sensors see the area behind the vehicle. The manual notes that driver assistance and parking functions may not work as intended when a trailer, carrier or other attachment is installed, so follow your manual's instructions for those features.
Roof side rail loads
For cargo on the roof, the 2027 Kona manual lists 200 lbs. on the roof side rails, evenly distributed, and warns that loading more than the specified weight may damage the vehicle.
Because roof loads raise the center of gravity, Hyundai says to avoid sudden starts, braking, sharp turns, abrupt maneuvers and high speeds, to drive slowly and turn carefully, to check the load often, and to keep large items within the overall roof length and width. Wind from passing vehicles can lift large, flat items such as wood panels or mattresses.
Kona gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR)
The Vehicle Weight And Luggage Volume table in the 2027 Kona manual lists these gross vehicle weights:
| Engine | 2WD | AWD |
|---|---|---|
| Smartstream G 2.0 Atkinson | 4,090 lbs. (1,855 kg) | 4,277 lbs. (1,940 kg) |
| Smartstream G 1.6 T-GDi | 4,277 lbs. (1,940 kg) | 4,453 lbs. (2,020 kg) |
From "Vehicle Weight And Luggage Volume" in the 2027 Kona owner's manual (SX2), read October 28, 2026; we checked the rendered table page. The certification label on your driver's door sill shows the GVWR and the front and rear GAWR for your vehicle.
The GVWR is the maximum allowable weight of the fully loaded vehicle, including all options, equipment, passengers and cargo. The Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) is the most a single axle can carry. Hyundai says the total weight of the vehicle, occupants, accessories and cargo must not exceed either rating, and that overloading can affect handling and braking, cause tire heat buildup and lengthen stopping distances. The manual adds that damage from overloading is not covered by the warranty.
Figuring how much you can carry
The Kona's Tire and Loading Information label on the driver's door sill states the combined weight of occupants and cargo that should never be exceeded. The manual's steps:
- Find the statement "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX kg or XXX lbs." on the placard.
- Work out the combined weight of the driver and passengers.
- Subtract that from the placard figure.
- The result is the cargo and luggage you can add. Hyundai's example: a 1,400 lb. figure with five 150 lb. passengers leaves 650 lbs.
- Make sure the luggage and cargo you load, including any hitch rack and its load, stays within that figure.
To find the actual loads on the front and rear axles, the manual says to weigh the vehicle at a weigh station, and to spread the load equally on both sides of the centerline. For tires, brakes and a pre-trip check, our service team can help; you can request a service appointment online.

The manual gives a limit for hitch mounted accessories such as bicycle racks and wheelchair racks: 220 lbs.
