How do you remote start a Hyundai Kona?

Within 32 ft. (10 m) of your Kona, press the door lock button on the smart key. Within 4 seconds, press and hold the Remote Start button for over 2 seconds, and the engine starts. The Kona must be in P (Park) with the hood and liftgate closed. Press Remote Start once to turn the engine off. These steps are from the 2027 Kona owner's manual.

Remote starting a Kona with the smart key

The 2027 Kona owner's manual shows more than one smart key type. On the key with the most buttons, the buttons are door lock (1), door unlock (2), liftgate open/close (3), panic (4), remote start (5) and Remote Smart Parking Assist (6). The Driving Your Vehicle chapter gives these steps:

  1. Press the door lock button on the smart key within 32 ft. (10 m) of the vehicle.
  2. Within 4 seconds, press and hold the Remote Start button for over 2 seconds. The engine starts.
  3. To turn the engine off, press the Remote Start button once.

The smart key section of the same manual gives a shorter window: press Remote Start within 2 seconds of pressing door lock. Pressing it right after you lock covers both. The manual also says: do not idle the engine for a long time.

Check these before you press Remote Start

After the engine starts

The 2027 Kona owner's manual says the vehicle turns off if you do not get in within 10 minutes after remotely starting it.

When you do get in, carry a registered smart key. If you get in without one, the engine turns off and the vehicle displays "Smart key must be present to keep the vehicle running".

Vehicle Auto-Shut Off (if equipped)

Separate from the 10-minute remote start limit, the 2027 Kona owner's manual describes a Vehicle Auto-Shut Off feature that turns the engine off when the vehicle is parked and left running for a long time.

The timer runs only when all of the manual's conditions are met, among them speed below 1.8 mph (3 km/h) in P (Park), neither pedal pressed, the driver's seat belt unfastened and the passenger seat empty. The engine then turns off after 60 minutes, and a timer appears on the instrument cluster 30 minutes before.
