After the engine starts

The engine turns off if you do not get in the vehicle within 10 minutes after remotely starting it.

On climate control, the manual's note reads: "In case of the manual operation, the climate control system will be maintained even when the engine is turned OFF. However, the automatic operation is set to 72 °F (22 °C)."

Vehicle Auto-Shut Off (if equipped)

Separate from the 10-minute remote start limit, the Elantra manual describes Vehicle Auto-Shut Off: if the vehicle is parked and the engine is left on for a long time, the engine turns off automatically to help reduce fuel consumption and prevent carbon dioxide poisoning.

The timer runs only when all of these are true: the driver's seat belt is not fastened, no occupant is detected in the passenger's seat, the vehicle is stopped in P (Park), the brake and accelerator pedals have not been pressed, and the infotainment system is not being updated. When they are, the engine turns off after 60 minutes, and a timer appears on the instrument cluster 30 minutes before. Releasing the accelerator or brake pedal, or pressing OK on the steering wheel while the timer shows, resets it.
