How to Remote Start a Hyundai Santa Fe
On a cold Michigan City morning, a remote start lets the Santa Fe run before you get in. This guide walks through remote starting a Santa Fe with the smart key, what keeps it from starting, what happens when you get in, and the phone and Bluelink options. It is based on the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual, read November 3, 2026. Features vary by trim and model year, so check the manual for your Santa Fe.
How do you remote start a Hyundai Santa Fe?
Within about 32 ft. (10 m) of your Santa Fe, press the door lock button on the smart key. Within 4 seconds, press and hold the Remote Start button for more than 2 seconds. The hazard warning flasher blinks and the engine starts. The Santa Fe must be in P (Park) with the hood and liftgate closed. Press Remote Start once to turn the engine off. These steps are from the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual.
Remote starting a Santa Fe with the smart key
The 2027 Santa Fe manual shows two smart key types (Type A and Type B). Its button list is door lock (1), door unlock (2), liftgate open/close (3), panic (4), remote start (5) and Remote Smart Parking Assist forward/backward (6), on keys so equipped. The manual's steps are:
- Press the door lock button on the smart key while within about 32 ft. (10 m) of the vehicle.
- Within 4 seconds of pressing door lock, press the Remote Start button (5) for more than 2 seconds. The hazard warning flasher blinks and the engine starts.
- To turn off the engine, press the Remote Start button once.
The manual also says: do not idle the engine for a long time.
Check these before you press Remote Start
From the 2027 Santa Fe manual:
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Gear in P (Park) | The vehicle must be in P (Park) for the remote start function to start. |
| Hood and liftgate closed | The vehicle does not remotely start if the hood or liftgate is open. |
| Smart key within 32 ft. (10 m) | The Remote Start button may not operate if the smart key is farther away. |
| Remote Start pressed within 4 seconds of locking | The manual's steps require pressing Remote Start within 4 seconds of the door lock button. |
| No software update running | During a software update you cannot use remote features, including remote start. |
From the smart key, Driving Your Vehicle and software update sections of the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual, read November 3, 2026.
After the engine starts
The 2027 Santa Fe manual says the engine turns off if you do not get in the vehicle within 10 minutes after remotely starting it.
When you do get in, carry a registered smart key. If you get in without one, the engine turns off and the vehicle displays "Smart Key must be present to keep the vehicle running".
Using a phone digital key
| Phone | Per the 2027 Santa Fe manual |
|---|---|
| Ultra Wide Band phone | When the phone and vehicle are connected by Bluetooth, Remote Start is available in the app provided by the phone maker. To start remotely, lock the vehicle with the door lock button in that app and press the remote start button within 4 seconds; the vehicle starts and the hazard warning lights blink. Press remote start again to turn it off. |
| Phone without UWB | Place the registered phone on the vehicle authentication pad (wireless charging pad), press the brake pedal and press the Engine Start/Stop button. The manual describes no remote start for these phones. |
The manual says the app function is only for Ultra Wide Band phone digital keys, the phone's Bluetooth must be on, the Bluetooth range can vary with the surroundings, and remote start in the app may not be available depending on the country or vehicle type (hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle).

Remote start through Bluelink
According to the 2027 Santa Fe manual, the vehicle can also be remotely started through the Bluelink subscription; it refers you to the Bluelink manual. Read more on our Blue Link page.
Vehicle auto-shut off (if equipped)
Separate from the 10-minute remote start limit, the 2027 Santa Fe manual describes a vehicle auto-shut off that turns the engine off if the vehicle is parked and left running for a long time, to help reduce fuel consumption and help prevent accidents.
The timer runs only when the manual's conditions are met, among them speed below 1.8 mph (3 km/h) in P (Park), neither pedal pressed, the driver's seat belt unfastened and the passenger seat empty. When it runs, the engine turns off after 60 minutes, and a timer appears on the cluster display 30 minutes before.
