Hyundai Santa Fe Oil Type and Capacity
The gas Santa Fe uses a 2.5L turbo engine with its own oil grade. This guide lists what the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual on owners.hyundaiusa.com says, read October 28, 2026: the oil it takes, how much it holds, when to change it, how to check the level and how to reset the oil change reminder. The Santa Fe Hybrid and other years can differ, so check the manual for your vehicle.
What oil does a Hyundai Santa Fe take?
According to the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual, the 2.5L turbo takes full synthetic SAE 0W-30 meeting API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6 and holds 6.13 US qt. (5.8 liters) for a drain and refill. Replace the oil and filter every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first, or every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months under severe usage.
Santa Fe oil grade and capacity
| Item | 2027 Santa Fe 2.5L turbo (Smartstream G2.5 T-GDi) |
|---|---|
| Oil | Full synthetic, API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6 |
| Viscosity | SAE 0W-30 |
| Capacity (drain and refill) | 6.13 US qt. (5.8 liters) |
| Additives | Never add any additives to the engine oil |
From Recommended Lubricants And Capacities and Recommended SAE viscosity number in the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual, read October 28, 2026.
Hyundai explains that lower viscosity oils can give better fuel economy and cold weather performance, while higher viscosity oils are needed for lubrication in hot weather, and that oils of any viscosity other than those recommended could result in engine damage. It says additives can change the properties of engine oil and may cause serious engine failure.
How often to change the oil in a Santa Fe
| Schedule | Engine oil and engine oil filter |
|---|---|
| Normal maintenance | Replace every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first |
| Severe usage (conditions D, H, I and L) | Replace every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months |
| After more than 10 years or 100,000 miles | Use the severe maintenance schedule |
From the scheduled maintenance notice, the normal maintenance schedule and the severe usage chart in the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual, read October 28, 2026.
The manual says the normal interval assumes oil that meets the recommended specification; if any other type is used, follow the severe schedule. Engine oil is consumed while driving, so Hyundai says to check the level on a regular basis.
Severe usage conditions for Santa Fe oil changes
The 2027 Santa Fe manual moves engine oil and filter to the 5,000-mile or 6-month interval under these four conditions:
| Condition | From the manual |
|---|---|
| D | Driving in areas using salt or other corrosive materials or in very cold weather |
| H | Using for towing or camping, and driving with loading on the roof |
| I | Driving for patrol car, taxi, or other commercial use |
| L | Engine oil usage which is not recommended (mineral type, semi-synthetic, lower grade spec, etc.) |
Checking the Santa Fe oil level
The 2027 Santa Fe manual gives this procedure:
- Follow all of the oil manufacturer's precautions.
- Park on level ground in P (Park) with the parking brake applied.
- Start the engine and let it warm up until the coolant temperature reaches a constant normal temperature.
- Turn the engine off, remove the oil filler cap and pull out the dipstick. Wait 15 minutes for the oil to return to the oil pan.
- Wipe the dipstick clean and push it fully back in.
- Pull it out again. The level should be between F (Full) and L (Low).
- If the level is below L, add enough of the specified oil to bring it to F.
Hyundai notes that oil consumption may increase while a new vehicle breaks in and should stabilize after 4,000 miles (6,000 km), and that driving habits, climate, traffic and oil quality all affect consumption. Wipe off any spilled oil right away.
Oil life reminder and the oil pressure light
The manual says the Santa Fe may be equipped with an Oil Life Management System that predicts engine oil life from your driving history. With severe driving, the remaining oil life alert can appear on the cluster display before the normal interval; have the oil and filter changed by an authorized Hyundai dealer. The system works when the recommended oil is used. To reset it after an oil change, select Setup > Vehicle > Convenience > Oil Change Reminder > RESET, then Yes.
If the Engine Oil Pressure warning light comes on, the manual says to drive carefully to the nearest safe location, stop, turn the engine off and check the oil level, adding oil if it is low. If the light stays on after adding oil, or no oil is available, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealer as soon as possible; continued driving with the light on may cause engine failure. Low oil pressure also activates an enhanced engine protection system that limits engine power.
