Hyundai Tucson Oil Type and Capacity

The two gas engines in the current Tucson hold the same amount of oil but call for different grades, so it pays to know which one you have before you buy oil. The figures here come from the 2027 Tucson owner's manual on owners.hyundaiusa.com, read October 28, 2026: oil grade by engine, capacity, the normal and severe change intervals, the dipstick check and the oil pressure warning. Other model years, the Tucson Hybrid and the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid can differ, so check the manual for your vehicle.

How much and what kind of oil does a Tucson take?

The 2027 Tucson owner's manual lists 6.13 US qt. (5.8 liters) for a drain and refill. The 2.5L (Smartstream G2.5 GDI) takes SAE 0W-20 and the 2.5L turbo (Smartstream G2.5 T-GDI) takes SAE 0W-30, both API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6, and the manual requires full synthetic. Change the oil and filter every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, or every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months under severe usage.

From the Recommended lubricants and capacities table and the Recommended SAE viscosity number chart in the 2027 Tucson owner's manual, read October 28, 2026. The table shows one capacity for both engines.

The manual says using oils of any viscosity other than those recommended may result in engine damage, recommends engine oils that carry the API Certification Mark, and says never to add additives to the engine oil. How often to change the oil in a Tucson

WhenEngine oil and filter
Normal maintenance scheduleReplace every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months
Severe usage (conditions D, H, I and L)Replace every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months
More than 10 years or 100,000 miles (150,000 km)Follow the severe maintenance schedule

From the normal maintenance schedule and the maintenance under severe usage and low mileage conditions chart in the 2027 Tucson owner's manual, read October 28, 2026.

The normal interval assumes oil that meets the recommended specification; if any other type is used, the manual says to follow the severe schedule. Hyundai also notes that the oil change schedule is meant to prevent oil deterioration and has nothing to do with oil consumption, so the level still needs checking between changes.

Severe usage conditions that shorten the interval

The 2027 Tucson manual ties the 5,000-mile or 6-month engine oil interval to these four driving conditions:

CodeCondition in the manual
DDriving in areas using salt or other corrosive materials or in very cold weather
HUsing for towing or camping, and driving with loading on the roof
IDriving as a patrol car, taxi, other commercial use of vehicle towing
LEngine oil usage which is not recommended (mineral type, semi-synthetic, lower grade spec, etc.)

Condition D covers very cold weather and roads treated with salt or other corrosive materials. If you are not sure which schedule fits how you drive, ask our service advisors.

Checking the Tucson oil level with the dipstick

Hyundai says engine oil consumption while driving is normal and the level should be checked and refilled regularly. The manual's procedure:

  1. Follow all of the oil manufacturer's precautions.
  2. Park on level ground in P (Park) with the parking brake applied.
  3. Start the engine and let it warm up until the coolant temperature reaches a constant normal temperature.
  4. Turn the engine off, remove the oil filler cap and pull out the dipstick, then wait 15 minutes for the oil to return to the oil pan.
  5. Wipe the dipstick clean and push it fully back in.
  6. Pull it out again: the level should be between F (Full) and L (Low).
  7. If it is below L, add enough of the specified oil to bring it to F.

Wipe up any spilled oil right away, and let the engine cool before replacing the oil. The manual says oil consumption may increase while a new vehicle breaks in and should stabilize after 4,000 miles (6,000 km), and that driving habits, climate, traffic and oil quality also affect consumption.

Oil change reminder and the oil pressure warning light

According to the manual, the Tucson may be equipped with an Oil Life Management System that predicts oil life from your driving history and can alert you before the normal interval if the oil deteriorates faster. It works when the recommended oil is used, and the remaining oil life should be reset after every oil change (Setup > Vehicle > Convenience > Oil Change Reminder > Reset).

If oil pressure drops because the engine is low on oil, the Engine Oil Pressure warning light comes on, the enhanced engine protection system limits engine power and the Malfunction Indicator Lamp comes on. For the Smartstream G2.5 GDI and G2.5 T-GDI, the manual says the light and the power limit turn off after the engine is restarted once oil pressure is restored.

Tucson oil questions

Does the Tucson take 0W-20 or 0W-30?

It depends on the engine. The 2027 Tucson owner's manual lists SAE 0W-20 for the 2.5L (Smartstream G2.5 GDI) and SAE 0W-30 for the 2.5L turbo (Smartstream G2.5 T-GDI), each meeting API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6.

Does a Tucson need full synthetic oil?

Yes. The manual requires API SN PLUS (or above) full synthetic engine oil. If a lower grade oil (mineral oil, including semi-synthetic) is used, it says the oil and filter must be replaced on the severe maintenance schedule.

What is the Tucson oil capacity?

The 2027 Tucson manual gives one drain-and-refill figure for both gas engines: 6.13 US qt. (5.8 liters).

What is the Tucson oil change interval?

Every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months on the normal schedule. Under severe usage conditions D, H, I and L in the manual, every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months. After 10 years or 100,000 miles (150,000 km), the manual says to use the severe schedule.

How do I reset the oil change reminder on a Tucson?

Per the manual, select Setup > Vehicle > Convenience > Oil Change Reminder > Reset on the infotainment system, then select Yes when it asks whether the engine oil has been changed.

Is this guide for the Tucson Hybrid or Plug-in Hybrid?

No. The 2027 Tucson manual used for this page covers the two gas engines. For a Tucson Hybrid or Plug-in Hybrid, use the owner's manual for that vehicle.
