Hyundai Sonata Oil Type and Capacity

The gas Sonata comes with one of two 2.5L engines, and they share an oil capacity but not an oil grade. This guide lists what the 2027 Sonata owner's manual on owners.hyundaiusa.com says, read October 28, 2026: the oil each engine takes, how much it holds, when to change it and how to check the level. The Sonata Hybrid and other model years can differ, so check the manual for your vehicle.

What oil does a Hyundai Sonata take?

According to the 2027 Sonata owner's manual, the 2.5L takes SAE 0W-20 and the 2.5L turbo takes SAE 0W-30, both full synthetic meeting API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6. Both engines hold 6.13 US qt. (5.8 liters) for a drain and refill. Replace the oil and filter every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first, or every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months under severe usage.

From Recommended Lubricants And Capacities (page 2-15) and Recommended SAE viscosity number (page 2-16) in the 2027 Sonata owner's manual, read October 28, 2026. The manual lists one capacity figure for both engines.

Hyundai explains that lower viscosity oils can give better fuel economy and cold weather performance, while higher viscosity oils are needed for lubrication in hot weather, and that oils of any viscosity other than those recommended could result in engine damage. The manual also says never to add any additives to the engine oil. Not sure which engine you have? Our service team can tell you from your VIN.

How often to change the oil in a Sonata

ScheduleEngine oil and engine oil filter
Normal maintenanceReplace every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first
Severe usage (conditions D, H, I and L)Replace every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months
After more than 10 years or 100,000 milesUse the severe maintenance schedule

From the normal maintenance schedule (page 9-11), the severe usage chart (pages 9-15 and 9-16) and the maintenance notice in the 2027 Sonata owner's manual, read October 28, 2026.

The manual says the normal interval assumes oil that meets the recommended specification; if it is not used, follow the severe schedule. It is normal for an engine to consume some oil while driving, so Hyundai says to check the level on a regular basis.

Severe usage conditions for Sonata oil changes

The 2027 Sonata manual moves engine oil and filter to the 5,000-mile or 6-month interval under these four conditions:

ConditionFrom the manual
DDriving in areas using salt or other corrosive materials or in very cold weather
HUsing for towing or camping, and driving with loading on the roof
IDriving for patrol car, taxi, or other commercial use
LEngine oil usage which is not recommended (mineral type, semi-synthetic, lower grade spec, etc.)

Checking the Sonata oil level

The 2027 Sonata manual gives this procedure:

  1. Follow all of the oil manufacturer's precautions.
  2. Park on level ground in P (Park) with the parking brake applied.
  3. Start the engine and let it warm up until the coolant temperature reaches a constant normal temperature.
  4. Turn the engine off, remove the oil filler cap and pull out the dipstick. Wait 15 minutes for the oil to return to the oil pan.
  5. Wipe the dipstick clean and push it fully back in.
  6. Pull it out again. The level should be between F (Full) and L (Low).
  7. If the level is below L, add enough of the specified oil to bring it to F.

Hyundai notes that oil consumption may increase while a new vehicle breaks in and should stabilize after 4,000 miles (6,000 km), and that driving habits, climate, traffic and oil quality all affect consumption. Wipe off any spilled oil right away.

Oil life reminder and the oil pressure light

According to the manual, the Sonata may be equipped with an Oil Life Management System that estimates oil life from your driving history. With severe driving, the remaining oil life alert can appear on the instrument cluster before the normal interval; have the oil and filter changed by an authorized Hyundai dealer. The system works when the recommended oil is used, and Hyundai says to reset it at every oil change.

If the Engine Oil Pressure warning light comes on, the manual says to drive carefully to the nearest safe location, stop, turn the engine off and check the oil level, adding oil if it is low. If the light stays on after adding oil, or no oil is available, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealer as soon as possible; continued driving with the light on may cause engine failure.

Sonata oil questions

What oil does a Hyundai Sonata use?

The 2027 Sonata owner's manual lists SAE 0W-20 for the 2.5L (Smartstream G2.5 GDI) and SAE 0W-30 for the 2.5L turbo (Smartstream G2.5 T-GDI). Both must meet API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6, and the manual requires API SN PLUS (or above) full synthetic oil.

What is the Sonata oil capacity?

The manual gives one figure for both gas engines: 6.13 US qt. (5.8 liters) for a drain and refill.

How many miles between Sonata oil changes?

The 2027 Sonata normal maintenance schedule replaces the engine oil and filter every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first. Under severe usage conditions D, H, I and L it is every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months.

Is semi-synthetic oil OK in a Sonata?

The manual requires full synthetic. If a lower grade oil (mineral oil, including semi-synthetic) is used, it says the engine oil and filter must be replaced on the severe maintenance schedule.

Does this guide cover the Sonata Hybrid?

No. It covers only the two gas engines in the 2027 Sonata owner's manual. For a Sonata Hybrid, check the owner's manual for your vehicle.

Do I need to reset anything after an oil change?

Yes, if your Sonata has the Oil Life Management System. The manual says to select RESET from the infotainment system, then select Yes when it asks whether the engine oil has been changed.
