Hyundai Elantra Oil Type and Capacity

This guide covers the engine oil the Hyundai Elantra takes, how much it holds, how often to change it and how to check the level. It is based on the 2027 Elantra owner's manual published on owners.hyundaiusa.com and read October 28, 2026, which covers two gas engines: the 2.0L (Smartstream G2.0) and the 1.6L turbo (Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi). Other years, the Elantra Hybrid and the Elantra N can differ, so check the manual for your vehicle.

What oil does a Hyundai Elantra take?

Per the 2027 Elantra owner's manual, both gas engines take full synthetic SAE 0W-20 oil meeting API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6. The 2.0L holds 4.54 US qt. (4.3 liters) and the 1.6L turbo holds 5.07 US qt. (4.8 liters) for a drain and refill. Change the oil and filter every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, or every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months under severe usage.

From the Recommended Lubricants And Capacities and Recommended SAE viscosity number sections of the 2027 Elantra owner's manual, read October 28, 2026.

The viscosity chart in the manual shows 0W-20 for both engines across the full temperature range, and the manual says using oils of any viscosity other than those recommended could result in engine damage. It recommends only engine oils that carry the API Certification Mark, and says never to add any additives to the engine oil.

From the normal maintenance schedule and the maintenance under severe usage conditions chart in the 2027 Elantra owner's manual, read October 28, 2026.

If a lower grade engine oil (mineral oil, including semi-synthetic) is used, the manual says the oil and filter must be replaced on the severe schedule. It also says the oil change schedule is there to prevent oil deterioration and is not related to oil consumption, so check and refill the oil regularly.

When the Elantra is on the severe usage schedule

The two engines have different severe usage lists in the 2027 Elantra manual. For the 2.0L, the 5,000-mile or 6-month interval applies under all twelve conditions, A through L. For the 1.6L turbo, it applies under conditions D, H, I and L:

ConditionFrom the manual
ARepeated driving short distance of less than 5 mi. (8 km) in normal temperature or less than 10 mi. (16 km) in freezing temperature
BExtensive engine idling or low speed driving for long distances
CDriving on rough, dusty, muddy, unpaved, graveled, or salt-spread roads
DDriving in areas using salt or other corrosive materials or in very cold weather
EDriving in heavy dust conditions
FDriving in heavy traffic
GDriving on uphill, downhill, or mountain roads
HTowing a trailer or using a camper, or driving with loads on the roof
IDriving as a patrol car, taxi, or other commercial use
JFrequently driving at high speeds or rapid acceleration/deceleration
KFrequently driving in stop-and-go traffic
LUsing engine oil that is not recommended (mineral type, semi-synthetic, lower grade spec, etc.)

How to check the Elantra engine oil level

The 2027 Elantra manual's steps are:

  1. Follow all of the oil manufacturer's precautions.
  2. Make sure the vehicle is on level ground in P (Park) with the parking brake set and the wheels blocked.
  3. Turn the engine on and warm it up until the coolant temperature reaches a constant normal temperature.
  4. Turn the engine off, remove the oil filler cap and pull the dipstick out. Wait 15 minutes for the oil to return to the oil pan.
  5. Wipe the dipstick clean and re-insert it fully.
  6. Pull the dipstick out again and check the level. It should be between F (Full) and L (Low).
  7. If the level is below L, add enough oil to bring it to F.

Hyundai says not to spill engine oil when adding or changing it, and to wipe off spilled oil immediately. Oil consumption may increase while a new vehicle breaks in, and it should stabilize after 4,000 miles (6,000 km). Allow the engine to cool before replacing the oil.

Oil Life Management and the oil warning lights

The manual says the Elantra may be equipped with an Oil Life Management System that predicts engine oil life from your driving history. If the oil deteriorates faster because of how the car is driven, the remaining oil life alert appears on the instrument cluster before the normal replacement interval; have the oil and filter changed by an authorized Hyundai dealer. The system works when the recommended engine oil is used, and the remaining oil life should be reset every time the oil is changed.

When oil pressure is low because there is not enough engine oil, the Engine Oil Pressure warning light comes on, and if the car keeps being driven that way, the enhanced engine protection system limits engine power and the Malfunction Indicator Lamp comes on. If the light comes on, the manual says to drive carefully to the nearest safe location, stop, turn the engine off and check the oil level. Some models also have an engine oil level warning light that comes on when the oil level is low.

Elantra engine oil questions

What type of oil does a Hyundai Elantra take?

The 2027 Elantra owner's manual lists full synthetic SAE 0W-20 engine oil meeting API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6 for both gas engines it covers, the 2.0L (Smartstream G2.0) and the 1.6L turbo (Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi).

How much oil does a Hyundai Elantra hold?

For a drain and refill, the 2027 Elantra manual lists 4.54 US qt. (4.3 liters) for the 2.0L and 5.07 US qt. (4.8 liters) for the 1.6L turbo.

Does the Elantra need full synthetic oil?

Yes. The manual requires API SN PLUS (or above) full synthetic engine oil. If a lower grade oil such as mineral oil or semi-synthetic is used, the engine oil and filter must be replaced on the severe maintenance schedule.

How often does an Elantra need an oil change?

On the normal maintenance schedule in the 2027 Elantra manual, both engines get new engine oil and filter every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months. Under severe usage conditions, the interval is every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months.

How do I reset the Elantra oil life reminder?

The manual says to select RESET from the infotainment system screen, then select Yes when the message "Has the engine oil been changed? Press [Yes] to reset the oil life." appears. Reset it every time the oil is changed.

Does this cover the Elantra Hybrid or Elantra N?

No. The oil table in the 2027 Elantra manual used here lists only the 2.0L and the 1.6L turbo, so check the owner's manual for an Elantra Hybrid or Elantra N.
